Toby loves all his children, regardless of skill.

So first of all, I conceded that @vagrantsun is actually the best toby on PS4 if not for the fact that he has triple my time played on him.

I don’t tend to use Legendaries on Toby except for the occasional double hug, but only when I’m not in some tournament or league so I don’t really have much input on the MPulse but it sounds fun.

I think Toby’s priority stat should actually be Max Shield Strength. Due to his VERY large crit spot in the front, having shields up as often and long as possible is the key to survival. Even without any damage item, Toby can still bring the hurt, but he has to be able to stay in lane to do it. I’ve been running a 0 Cost Max Shield and 0 Cost Shield Recharge Delay along with the Epic LLC fist for extra Attack Damage and a little more Shield. Your shields being down means you should be in cover asap.

While crit damage items may seem helpful, I find that attack damage or skill damage should be your priority as they are far more consistent in output. Attack speed is pretty negligible and reload and recoil have no effect. I can agree with some health regen to go with your shield, but I think having more shields will always be better than more health on Toby. I don’t find cooldown to be a particularly effect item class since it’s only really useful when stacked to the max. Toby needs other stats much more than the cooldown. Sprint speed and movement speed are funny to use with the speed gate augment at level 2, but not terribly necessary otherwise since boosting will generally get you to where you want to go. Please don’t take healing power.

I agree with your assessments on counters. I’ll add that Toby is particularly strong against melee comps as stun mine or slow mine can effectively dispatch them with varying levels of hilarity. If you are feeling particularly cocky or rude, I enjoy taking the self destruct and taunting melees as we both die together.

I’d recommend shield recharge rate over delay.

At best SRD will give you 1.05 seconds less time until full shield. With the rest of your Toby build you have 778 shield (300+240+140+98). Normally it would take 18 seconds for you shield to fully charge but with one SRR gear you shave it down to 12.6 seconds compared to 17 seconds with SRD gear.

I would include Beatrix as a counter because her projectiles can destroy Toby’s rail gun shots, pierce them, pierce the deployable shield, and still hit Toby.

That’s what i feel myself, thank you. Beatrix is without a doubt the least threatening of Toby’s five hard counters, but a skilled one can still harass him enough to be considered one.

That’s true, but if you get interrupted at any point during that 17 seconds, the recharge rate doesn’t do you much good. The Recharge Delay Reduction makes it so you can take a non critical shot slightly soon. Honestly it’s probably up to preference at that point and neither pick is going to be 100% better all the time.

@HandsomeCam giving feedback about the loadout I suggested from the perspective of a neophyte skirmisher Toby

It went decently, I had to focus shards at first to get veil manipulator up but it didn’t take too long to have all 3 items, my health regen after 3 minutes and with over 1000 shards was at 37.8 constant regen.

I was up against another Toby, an oscar mike and a beatrix as well as a kid ultra and deande.

even with me having a derpy mess around moment and taking vortex mines I was doing well(ended up 1-2 but I play Toby as a very long range so it was partly me getting into the groove of it)
Going against anyone else I really didn’t worry even though I’m overall a mediocre Toby at best

Overall it worked for me

Thanks, i’ll give it a shot if i have the gear to do so. I have often wondered what i could do with Toby if i didn’t have to run, as i usually do good with my narrow in-lane windows already…

I don’t have a Blissbeast Skullplate, and i typically don’t keep non-legendary DR gear, because i don’t have many bank pages (OCD; same reason i only have gear loadouts for my mains). Do you think the Pain-2-Gain Re-Knitter would work?

Pain 2 gain would be perfect with a healer and if you still retreat I think it would work

I have a blue needle with secondary health regen after staying alive for 3 minutes, which would pair nicely with it. If i was to throw on an extra DR gear item, it should work when i get panic mode.

Also, as i never got around to testing it, do you need to ā€œsurviveā€ for another three minutes after dying, for the secondary bonus on such gear to reapply?

I suppose I should contribute some helpful advice to people who have never tried Toby. Most of the posts so far haven’t really been for the new Tobsters out there.

I’ll try to keep it simple and i expect other Toby mains to correct something if they disagree.

-Toby is extremely squishy. That means he dies. Very fast.

-Never fire off a rail gun shot unless it is fully charged. The few exceptions are if you need to get the heck out of the lane quickly, or if an enemy has really low health and they are about to run around the corner or some cover.

-Deployment of the force field in locations near cover is important, or it will be taken down very fast. You can also put half of it behind cover too so it isn’t completely exposed to enemy fire.

-Slow mines are your best friends when dealing with waves of minions.
-Stun mines are your best friends when dealing with enemy Battleborn.
-Vortex mines are your best friends for moving Kleese away from his rift network or to pull someone off a ledge, or to put a stop to enemies that love jumping around.

  • I see a lot of inexperienced Toby players trying to use his ultimate as a last-ditch attack when they are about to die. Use the ultimate to take out those pesky mobile targets and melt entire minion waves quickly. At least use his ultimate when you have full hp (preferably also full shields and his force field dropped in front of him as well) and with team members nearby that can protect you.

-oh his passive ability - the thrusters - recharge at eight seconds each, for a total of 3. You can see this on his dashboard as three symbols that slowly fill up. Use them only when they are finished charging because using a boost before another is done charging will reset it, and you’ll have to wait for it to fully charge again.

… Can’t think of anything else. This stuff seems obvious to experienced Toby players, but not to new players.

Yes, after I died my regen drops to 30.8 for 3 minutes

I think so. Stay alive for the effect. Die and stay alive for 3 minutes all over again…

I appreciate the Toby tips for new players, and see nothing to contradict! I ESPECIALLY can’t stress THIS-

-enough. Once upon a time, Toby using core discharge was all but considered a free kill, because damn near ANY character could face-tank the piss-weak beam, and shred Toby’s crit-box when he moves slowly during it’s use. Since it’s damage buff, it deters most players from attempting to kill Toby when he is using it. However, snipers, as well as characters with a stun or silence, WILL attempt to kill you if you aren’t careful. Use situational awareness, be mindful of the wind-up time, and do not be afraid to end the skill and run.

I can help you with that bud

It’s definitely the best DR legendary

@HandsomeCam veils edge advanced has the extra regen legendaries(veil manipulator and blissbeast)

It’s a story legendary? Sweet, i’ll work on acquiring it tonight, thank you guys. Vick, i’d be more than happy to have you accompany me, but i doubt you will be up and willing to play in 10 hours…

Both of them drop from the same mission and for insane regen builds they push it to the next level
