Times haven’t changed much actually. Back when I was a kid we always had Emergency Broadcast System tests because of the Cold War. Every screeching test was reminder that we could all go up in smoke at anytime. It was scary at times to be a kid during the 80’s.

I remember the Emergency Alert System.
That sound would always scare me as a kid.
It was mostly for hurricanes and thunderstorms.
We still have the old air raid type sirens for tornadoes too, in certain areas. The first time I heard it, I was like “is that literally an air raid siren?” It carried pretty well.
Oh God yes, I’ve grown up in a warm comfortable bubble in comparison to the information / alerts my parents got during the Cold War. Britain had a terribly memorable series of public service videos called ‘Protect and Survive’ which are quite extraordinary, this calm British accent with cartoon visuals telling you how best to tag corpses

Living as close to the coast as I do, and in tornado alley, we have the air raid sirens. for tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.
Trust me, you will hear them. In fact just the other day one was going off for a solid 5 minutes. My ears were bleeding.
I think they have those everywhere for a variety of emergencies, though they at least have them in Chicago as well, and we’re nowhere near the coast. Every first Tuesday of every new month, i am greeted at 8:00am by their- wait for it…
