The "What pissed you off today thread" V2

Being at work without air-conditioning during a heatwave. Yesterday it was up to 39 ° Celsius outside, about 102 Fahrenheit. Today is forecasted to be even hotter. Yay.

The cold doesn’t bother me, but I dislike heatwaves to the point of actually hating them.

Hearing the s*** a friend’s having to deal with at home, the latest of which is SERIOUS boundary invasions.

I believe I’ve stated before my opinion of cars : the fact that we feel the need to use an object with that much weight and uses that much energy to propel an on-average 150lb person. It’s completely insane. I’ve started to temper my opinion regarding electric cars - especially since I’m now working with them. Even still.

So you’d think that I’d be elated by the sudden increase in popularity of electric bicycles. And, in principle, I am.

Best of both worlds, right? Super light, incredibly energy efficient, quick, simple(!), still requires active input from the rider, gets you out of traffic and into the bike lane.

Hold right there : “into the bike lane”.
Now to what pisses me off.

Here I am, a lifelong cyclist, coming by my kilometres in the most honest way possible : under my own power. For decades this has been how I get around, get to work, pick up groceries. And here come these monsters passing me at 40-50km/h (often unsafely) because they’re too lazy to just get in shape.

These people piss me off.
And I’m pissed off at myself because I can’t decide how much of my pissiness is envy.

I was reading a paper about their eco-maths the other day. Apparently electric cars do result in a significant ‘global warming potential’ reduction, but this is at the cost of increased human and water toxicity along the supply line, which needs work.

I’m with you; haven’t taken a driving test and I don’t have plans to.

Succinctly the damage varies by pollution type (rare earth metals for example), and where your local power comes from. In that particular context though, even in a place using coal power it’s still a net reduction in emissions over the total average lifetime.

I heard a weird thing on NPR the other day that indicated we were way closer to Hydrogen energy than I would have thought. It’s still a ways off, but apparently still very much on the table?

Lol yeah, I heard a journalist full of that too. Whenever I hear those cut and paste stories I’m reminded of Colbert’s presidential bid slogan, “making a better tomorrow… tomorrow!”

Yeah I didn’t catch the whole story (Dark Confession: I only listen to NPR on short trips around town) but they were talking about how one of the big things in going to renewables is that right now, heating homes is super expensive for anything but natural gas. They expect Hydrogen to (eventually) be the route to go, but the NG companies have latched on to it, boasting themselves as “the green go between for renewables”. Which is… um… hm. Not true. But probably the reality we’re looking at for a bit now.

Which I guess is what pissed me off today.

Wham.

Nailed it.

From a strict “calories in/calories out” standpoint, there’s no comparison. A customer figured out his per-kilometre cost of driving his electric car vs his gasoline SUV and it was something like 1/20th.

You can argue the environmental cost of energy and materials creation for electric but the same applies to crude extraction and refining.

Still, where is all that electricity supposed to come from for cars when overall power consumption is already through the roof?

Hydrogen is an excellent option since it can be created right at renewable energy producing sources : in particular solar farms. Then can be transported like gasoline. This can alleviate the demand on local power producers, be it hydro, coal, nuke, etc.

Another plan I’ve seen - hopelessly idealistic perhaps - is having each home covered in solar panels which directly feed into a hydrogen tank. This acts as a massive battery to power your home and car. Neat idea.

Problem is Hydrogen gas is highly flammable. You would just be replacing 1 flammable fuel with another. I’m not sure if having your own Hydrogen tank next to your house is an appealing option, considering how easy it is to ignite. Also, because of its flammability, low density, and extremely low freezing point (meaning that it is only feasibly stored as a gas), it would be just as much of a problem to store as natural gas.

In comparison, renewable energy sources and batteries are getting better all the time. Plus, it’s not just about producing more electricity, it’s also about using it more efficiently, storing it when we have an excess supply, then using that stored energy when we need it more. And as for the cost of Electric vs Gasoline test: Gasoline is so cheap in comparison because it it so imperative for the vehicles we currently have. When we started using non-renewable fuels for our vehicles, they were expensive. Thanks to mass production, the cost of extracting and transporting has greatly reduced, leading to lower prices, compared to the cost of maintenance for power plants and wiring, and power generation. Once these fuels become scarce, fuel prices would increase greatly, which would lead to the Electric car being the much cheaper choice.

Youngblood is an unplayable game since aiming goes far slower than molasses, and you cant be accurate either. If there’s not a fix in sight I can get more money back than I paid for it atleast.

Sounds like the opposite of D2. If you’re aiming toward a target and something closer than your target wanders into your field of view, your barrel is pulled toward the closer target; the effect seems stronger the faster the new target is moving.

Relatively, the Walkers seem to have their own gravity field – you’ll circle-strafe them without touching your right stick.

Ugh, autoassist. No, game, i was saving that minion for FFYL…

Truly…:

That level of aim-assist is unnatural. (Read that in Palpatine’s voice.)

In Youngblood you may change your sensitivity all you want, but you might as well be stuck with a low DPI mouse in comparison. And without the aim assist you somehow can stil miss your target.
Maybe it is because I now mostly play my games on a gaming laptop with a high DPI mouse, but I sure dont recall Wolfenstein The New Colossus being this bad with aiming.

Pain is getting to me. Not my ‘interesting’ foot but from the sprained ankle and the rest of my skeleton which have to work overtime in order to give that one a holiday. I’m usually ok at dealing with pain but it’s grinding me down a bit. Still, getting my cast and bandages changed tomorrow, which’ll be nice.

Why would you pay for it when you can get it for free?

Because I like the show well enough that I want to support the studio behind it. Just not for the money you can buy a 3DS with
