Thoughts on the Gear System

TLDR: Don’t randomize gear, standardize the gear.

Can you please set this up more like a league of legends system? We know what we are getting ahead of time. How can you keep a game balanced when you can never get the best piece of gear because it won’t drop? Tell me please, because the gear stats are substantially meaningful. I honestly have no idea why you are gating any content when it is a pay up front game. I understand you want people to have something to work towards, but I feel like you are going about it all wrong. Things that effect game play should not be locked away and if nothing else for the love of god not random. Loot in this should NOT be borderlands style… I really believe the only way this game survives is if it can pull of some competitiveness and a lot of the design choices are going against that.

If you are going for the CoD style unlocks, you still know when you are unlocking X weapon because it is directly tied to a level. You did this with characters, but the gear is still locked to the random packs. Also, will there be loot I never see, because I have no intention of playing single player/campaign? That would be pretty awful for the multiplayer as well.

I can stomach unlocking characters and unlocking gear, but unlocking characters and randomly getting garbage gear that I will never use seems like the biggest waste of time ever. Similar to the card system in Paragon which already has seemed terrible. I think I opened 20-30 packs in that game and haven’t gotten the equipment I am looking for and they haven’t even put in large portion of the equipment into the game yet.

I dropped 60 dollars on that game and it is already dead to me and it’s not even out of alpha. At least I expected it to come of that game. It was just something to keep me content until Battleborn and Overwatch.

Love the system as is. A little bit of randomness extends the life of the game. You never know what cool little surprise you might get that inspires a new way to build a character or maybe even trying one you haven’t put much/any time into.

I don’t understand your logic. Completing all your gear sets and unlocking everything is not the end of a game. If that were the case why are people still playing League of Legends, Dota, Team Fortress or Counterstrike? Getting everything unlocked and ready to go is where the game actually starts in my opinion. If this game can’t keep players on the same level it is dead. To basically every person I know who has already bought the game, they may even say it’s not true, but once some of us quit the rest will follow. Cool the game got sales, but it will end up a ghost game of people who want to play single player for its bordlandesque play style.

The goal here is for the game to be something that can be played for a long period of time and have multiple iterations or be updated in my mind. Think league of legends or counter strike. Otherwise what is the purpose of trying to partially copy their models besides grabbing some money and running? If that’s what they want as a publisher they can trust I won’t be back.

I played counter strike back when I was in primary school and two decades later I still boot up it’s newer version to play. I do it because it is a solid game and doesn’t end when you randomly finish all the achievements.

Not everything has to work the same way as those games. I much prefer this system. People keep making suggestions to do things like other games without stopping to consider that the way those games do things isn’t the only way. Simply expressing a difference of opinion.

I also like the random gear. Just my 2.

I think the commander card packs should all be unlocked at the same level, rather than at different times. Otherwise, my only other suggestion is the ability to trade packs and character skins. Even thought of a cool trailer for that, having two kids playing with action figures with trading cards, representing the actual battleborn game.

I also think buying characters with credits would be a good idea, because I feel there aren’t enough things to buy.

Actually, I believe the ‘best’ gear is obtainable by doing lore challenges. Specifically, doing all of a specific basasses lore challenges nets you a piece of gear tailored to their playstyle.

The random lewt actually keeps people coming back, and getting the loot. It keeps it exciting, and fresh. Look at TF2, CS:GO, and DotA. Random loot, and how much money do they make off of it?

People like gambling, especially if it’s not real money.

The item systems, your talking about in MOBA’s like League of Legends & DotA2, are reset for every match. The gear system in Battleborn is closer to random item drops in a RPG and are persistent on your account from match to match. As a player you know what gear you have in your loadouts and should know what works best for the characters you tend to play.

Another thing is with the gear system, as it currently is, helps to promote players playing the story mode to get starter gear items there first. This also will help players begin to understand how to play a character before being thrown in the grinder of PVP.

I kind of feel you about the random loot thing, but they are trying to make a game which is a mix of many different types of game. I know that certain gear items for certain characters will be viewed as must haves, but this system also may help to cause some players to think of something new which may become the next big must have gear combo.

I am referencing the runes in League not items. You would realize this if you had played them. Dota’s items that “randomly” drop do not effect the game in any way. That is actually one of their selling points.

Once again, those random loots don’t really change how much damage you are doing. The items you are mentioning are just for skins and looks/keeping track of kills. They do not affect game play. Also people don’t play Dota for random loot for the most part. The pieces that drop in games are generally garbage and if it is a good piece you maybe go buy the rest of the set. In a 1000 games I would lay money on you completing MAYBE one set that costs 60 cents in the market place. People who really want look that aren’t 10 just buy it with real money, and this is possible in these games because, again, it doesn’t change game play.

I realize not everything needs to be the same, but gating things that make people more competitive is not a good way to go about it. Most people who don’t play league hate that they had to farm runes for their characters and those you know 100% what you are getting when you buy it. You guys may think it is cute, but coming from a group that has been playing shooters and moba for years, almost none of them would pick league again over Dota due to the rune system if they had to start fresh. The advice for new players in League is to not even buy the runes that are not tier 3.

I am not just saying this because I dislike it, but because what you think may be cool, is going to drive away a lot of players who see it as a barrier to competitiveness.

Then maybe they could have some kind of standardized gear loadouts for ranked play. Without messing with it for the rest of us.

That I could definitely deal with and would be fantastic.
