Tips For Taking Out The Tanks?

Ok, so lately I’ve been running into a lot of Atticus’s and Montanas and Kleese’s and H-specced Galileas etc, you know, the characters who just soak up all the damage and just take FOREVER to die, if ever, no matter how ridiculous of a health / shields advantage you have over them.

Do you guys have any tips on taking these guys out in a hurry, aside from just being persistent in chasing them down / dodging their attacks and continuing to deal out damage?

Thanks in advance.

If you want an easy time with the characters mentioned above one method is simply choosing to play as Toby. He has a relatively easy time with them. For more strategic counters and technical explanations I will leave it to others as I am a bit distracted at the moment.

  1. Use Benedict.
  2. Double team them if possible.
  3. Don’t get caught alone.
  4. Lead them somewhere you have turrets set up, like your base.
  5. Flank them because those with shields can only block damage from the front and not the sides and back.
  6. Go for crit shots whenever possible.

It’s pretty hard to 1v1 a tank, given their nature is to absorb damage.

It requires team focus fire and removing their support first if possible.

Trying to 1v1 Montana is usually an exercise in futility.

As for Kleese removing his rifts first is key to stop him from keeping his shield up.

It’s a bit of a meta strategy, but, aside from maybe Montana, if you can deny them xp (or, in Kelvin’s case, minions to Chomp) early on and prevent them from getting to specific key levels, you can stop them from gaining those almost obscene levels of survivability and damage.

Boldur takes huge feedback damage when you break his shield, so shoot his shield

what character’s do you prefer? and what role do you tend to lean towards?

for example as ambra I always take her left helix at level 1, it increases damage enemies will take for four seconds when damaged by my sunspots. so while i’m fighting the tank I can drop sunspots that will heal me, damage them a bit, and debuff them so everything else I do does an extra 16% damage. and after I drop the sunspot alternate her scorching strikes with her staff beam to reduce the cooldown on sunspots so you can almost always have 2 running side by side

it all depends on your preference though. and for kleese remember to shoot his rifts or drop aoe’s or he’ll laugh as you tickle his shield.

The best thing to do is focus fire, ping them on the map and wait for reinforcements.

But there are other alternatives, depending on your composition. Ranged DPS like OM or WF can destroy them with crits, the snipers do this best, AoE attacks as they are generally slow, and CC in particular slows to make them virtual statues. Melee attacking a tank alone is not the best of ideas, but any range generally pushes them out of lane of lowers their health enough to the point that melee can chase them down and finish them off. Any form of damage amp works particularly well, Ambra’s level 1 L or Reyna’s priority target for example, but if they’ve stacked damage reduction and health regen then you’ll probably need to converge and focus fire them.

Is no one gonna mention how he can now include Kleese in the “Tank” category and no one bats an eye lol

He has over 1,400 base health, a shield that scales with level, and can keep his shield constantly charging while locking down an area. I’ve always thought of Kleese as a pseudo-tank, though that’s a discussion for another topic.

Slow, stun, and aim for the head works for pretty much anyone.

Having someone on your team with a DoT also helps, like Miko’s poisoned kunai, Mellka’s venom, or Thorn’s blight and/or curse w/ Hexsanguination helix (can you tell I like Eldrid?).

Shield penetration works too; think Orendi’s and Whiskey Foxtrot’s later level helixes (can you tell I also like Rogues?).

What @Kitru said is also extremely valuable. Try not to let them destroy your buildables or kill too many of your minions and they’ll lag behind in levels.

Well you can play Marquis, but really you need to wound them usually if you can’t CC them down.

Characters good vs tanks:

Marquis
Melka
Whiskey Foxtrot
Thorn
Benedict

Characters with wound:

Galilea
Attikus
Phoebe
Whiskey foxtrot
Melka
Isic

Right now Melka probably is the best, even though Marquis is pretty free because Melka is even freer. Half the time they can’t catch you and the other half they spend backing because your poison is so broken on them. If they catch you just spike and then aim almost straight up in the direction you wanna go and claw lunge. And just FREEEEEEEEEEEE away to safety.

True story brah

Honestly, I usually just try to ignore them. You emptying your skills on them is what they want…Although, if you are set on trying to kill them/drive them out of lane. Benedict, Toby, Ghalt, and Marquis are great at hitting big body characters (usually tanks). Ghalt and Benedict are my favs for this. Montana, Attikus, Kleese, etc. are just trap bait. Easiest pulls in the world. and then they just melt.

I don’t know how you could miss Hawkeye on Montana, Kleese, etc. so he is good as well.
