I haven’t touch Borderlands 3 since the second DLC. What made me play BL2 and even make some showcase videos of builds was that the game had replay value, I started it from lv 1 dozens of times. BL3 has better gameplay mechanics (it’s almost two generations gap after all), but the storyline is a very big no. It ruined the whole game and it also heavily damaged the franchise.

It scratches my FPS itch like no other game does (with the possible exceptions of BL2 and TPS, an honorable mention goes to Doom 2016/Eternal). Every time I pick up another FPS that I’m not in specifically for atmosphere/storyline (where I’ll put up with “good” combat to get my hands on “great” atmosphere), the play is so… boring. BL3’s combat is exceptional.

  • Movement speeds are slow in other games.
  • There’s no serious vertical element to the game (mantling to get up: slam/no fall damage to get down), and jumping is useless (where it’s a huge part of my gameplay in BL3).
  • The enemy variety isn’t as deep… different attack types, various armament types, various dodge types, elemental affinities
  • There might be a couple action skills? BL3 has, what, over a dozen functionally different action skills to choose from (that can be augmented differently too). Beyond the action skills are the active skills in the skill trees, COMs, anointments, guardian ranks, and even Mayhem Modifiers… many things that I can manually toggle/stack to take advantage of.
  • Does anything have weapon variety like this game? Note: I use every weapon in the game with red text and/or an alien barrel.
  • The map/environment variety is huge, and there’s a live end game. Like I don’t need to reload a prior save point, I can just plop down anywhere and be in a wide range of combat (plus the missions are all resettable without having to start over).

I have a spreadsheet that randomly picks a map and one of my ten allegiance characters (one’s alien-barrel only). Each of those has a different build/action skill/pet, and they’re all using entirely different weapons, so the combat is fairly different between them (like there isn’t an action skill or weapon that’s off the table here).

When I go to play, I roll those dice and I play wherever and whoever comes up. Then I go pick a loadout based on the map, what I’ll be doing there, and how hard I want the combat. For example: if I roll Dahl Zane in Trashlantis, I’ll pick out some Dahl corrosive and cryo gear. Easy mode? Hornet, Night Hawking, Brashi’s Dedication, and Breath of the Dying. Hard mode? Kaleidoscope, Vanquisher, Autoaime, Digby’s Smooth Tube.

Then I figure out what I’m going to do there. Unfinished story missions take precedent, but I’ll grab a side mission, an open map/weapon challenge, chest run, or total map purge (depending on my mood and how much time I have). The next time I play, I have to use weapons I haven’t used previously, and the cycle starts anew.

The number of different map/character combinations is around a thousand, I think? With this and the different loadouts used every time, it’s very rare that I do the same thing in the game… like it’s still a very fresh experience even after all this time. Each of the characters tends to come up a bit over once a week, and with so much weapon variety, I might not fire the same weapon for a couple months. Hell, I think there are some Maliwan things that I still haven’t even fired yet (finally figured out how to tame the Shrieking Devil, and took that for a legit spin for the first time a couple weeks ago, and that weapon has been a thing for days).

tl;dr - not even a little boring yet.

Sort of. I use BL3 to play Kill Wotan. So far I’ve been able to do it once with Moze and once with Zane. I use Mayhem 11 and True takedown mode. Sooooo I want to build a URAD Moze. So every now and then I farm for some URAD weapons. And I would love to find an Atom Balm Deathless. Giving hope on that.

I play less and less. I started playing again to try and roll some URAD weapons. After spending about 20 thousand Eredium and still not having what I want, I put it away again. Might play when the Cartel event starts.

On any given day I’m more likely to play TPS or BL2. BL2 lately, but I have a date with Timothy coming up. My TPS goal is to beat the game on UVHM without dying, not even once.

Does this include the soulrender? One of the strongest rifles in the game, and I happen to have a few blast masters and blood letters with Dahl crit, and weapon damage. The skulls hit harder than iron bear.

It does indeed. Probably the most underrated gun in the game. Also a boogeyman for bosses, and hunter seeker grenades.

I find boosting fire rate makes more skulls proc.

Don’t ever change sir. Like to see what you would do with a Landscaper in BL3 :upside_down_face:

I have as well. I can’t decide which is better for my Dahl Amara, this or the breath. The breath is the pimpernel of bl3. Like, it feels so satisfying when all those green globs just explode everywhere, killing everything, usually myself as well. I really really want to boost indiscriminate gearbox.

OMG, why am I still playing this game?!? Uuuuugh, obviously I’d play something else but I’m literally FORCED to only ever play BL3! There’s definitely NO OTHER OPTION.

If only someone somewhere would make, like, another video game or something I could play instead

There’s a hundred different ways to play the game. Start a new character, and focus on a Hyperion shotgun/SMG fl4k or something. Just pick random stuff. It’s fun, but I wish my load times were faster and the story missions are a slog when traveling to this planet, talk to Lilith, grab this, etc.

I keep thinking randomly that I should be able to recreate this with any ol’ shotgun (or whatever for that matter) set to sticky mode, and I just haven’t gotten around to doing that. I think because 1) I forget, and 2) because the stickies can be manually detonated, I tend to put them right on the target instead of into a trap (plus I don’t think there’s a proximity detonation mode).

I do have a fine Stranger AR I kept for just this purpose though. Next time I fire up my Torgue rep, I’ll give that a spin.

The loop of borderlands is perfect for me. I can play for as little or as long as I have time for. I don’t need to sit down for hours at a time. I can leave the game on and farm a boss and during the load times I can usually clean my house or get a decent workout in. Sure the game is full of bugs but you know what I still love it, warts and all.

the daily/weekly challenges keep me coming backs – but the daily challenges are broken and I completed the weekly, so now I start it to see if they are fixed , if not move on…

No proximity detonation, but IIRC there might be a timer? Hard to tell when you’re in the thick of a mob! Closest I’ve come to a trap is plastering the stickies into an area where a target is in cover, then detonating the lot at once. For example, if someone is ducked down behind a balcony wall, I’ll try and plaster the ceiling and wall behind them. It can be easier than trying to land a grenade in just the right spot.

Back when BL2 got a spruce-up for the eighth generation, even before The Handsome Collection came out, I said I’d play the game for twice as long if it got a photo mode. When that finally happened with BL3 my words have come true, I play for the fun and am still taking pictures worth posting. It’s been my most played game since its launch with over 7k pics taken.

Everything you’ve said here resonates true so much! Especially your remarks about the combat.

This is the most sublime post I’ve read on here.

No, you’re good - I’m just unable to play without taking pics. I do some co-op nowadays and get twitchy when I remember I can’t pause the action

Why am I playing? Because I enjoy the game.

I enjoy trying different builds. Still trying to find an Amara and Fl4k I like.

I like trying different weapons and gear; there are 381 different legendaries in the game. Pretty sure I still haven’t tried them all.

I like dailies, when they work. It fun to puzzle out where to farm nogs, enforcers, etc. Always fun to revisit an area to tracked down a specific named enemy.

Well, let’s see if we can scare up an answer.

A few points why I still play…

  1. Mantling

  2. BAR - Decently expanded from BL2

  3. DLC’s - IMO all 4 DLC’s from the first season pass are AMAZING!

  4. Anointed - Man these things terrify me, especially when I run into 2-3 of them at once.

On the subject of counter points or Cons if you will:

Goliaths - facepalm**sighs

How do you possibly take one of the wildest and craziest S^&* starting mechanics from the 2nd game and turn it into a roided up RHOOMBA who cannot navigate carpet ??

By the time a Goliath reaches ANYTHING it practically is dead from gunfire. These guys in BL2 I can honestly say are at least 1500+ hours of the reasons I played the 2nd game for 3400+ hours…They were amazing and so much fun to kite from camp to camp.

P.S. - I wish the goliaths were 1/10 the fun of the Anointed =)

Are there Godliaths in this game, or some equivalent? Farming them (like actually raising and feeding them) in BL2 was super fun. I’ve got some pretty big here, but am not sure I ever got them to a final stage.
