Under used characters

So in a cast of 25 and growing characters I am sure this game will have some characters that nobody will play. You know the D rank characters that everyone agrees are just not up to stuff for whatever reason. Now some of them can probably be fixed with soft tweaks but i bet a lot of them would need a bit more major rework for them to catch up in popularity and usage.

So what do you think will happen with these characters? Does anyone care that i see an oscar mike in every game and i have never seen any Attikus’s in my 60 levels of play? Will they get reworked or does there always have to be a low tier set of hero’s just because of what that hero is designed to do? I am really curious going forth to see what Battleborn will do with these characters.

Also do you think character concepts not being met play a part into under usage. Like Toby an adorable penguin in a mech in my mind should be ravaging the field as an armored tank but instead he plays as a cautious controller. Argue if he is great or not but did it really go with your mindset of what he should be?

Shayne and Aurox is a massive character that i would never peg as a stealth initiator. I like that my conceptions of her is changed by a different play style then what i first imagined but in her case (unlike toby) her play style really is well done with her mechanics adding up a solid style of play even with a large tanky frame. Maybe this is just my opinion on the characters though.

Good points. I think it may be along the lines of certain characters being more easily usable than others. Oscar Mike is extremely easy to use, and has a highly familiar playstyle for a lot of people. And he will consistently “perform” for most players. On the other hand, characters like Kleese are difficult to use, and hard to master. But, once the know-how is gained, has the same killing potential as the Oscar Mike. The D-rank characters are placed in that “rank” because of what you saying by perceived conceptions & accessibility. I hope that the Attikus’ and Reynas of the game get noticed a bit more and the variety starts to appear. Take comfort in knowing that your time and effort towards a “D-rank” will pay off against the hordes of Raths and Oscar Mikes!

I’m still maining whisky foxtrot. He’s much better than most think but still needs a decent buff to be up to par with the rest of the roster. The fact that he is so underestimated does work in my favour though as I’ll often get looked over as priority target by the enemy team

A lot of things will change when the game is release and we see all types of new players and teams. Then the tier will completely change. There will also be patches and new game modes where characters might make a serious comeback. Time will tell…

So here is a question. Is an easy to use character a better character then a hard to use character? I use kleese all the time and i love him to death but i am lucky if i pick up 6 kills in a game and he is bulky and is targeted by everyone. So should there be an added benefits to characters that are harder to use? Should they also be better then an easy to use character because it required more skill? Or is it just personal play style of what a player likes and they should all be equal? Although i know there is never a perfect equality in games like this but then what is the point of more difficult characters?

On a side note, what about characters that are much stronger late game when they get to level 6+? I have noticed a few characters that have to slowly wait until they unlock a few things and gain moment. Now this is fine in some games but there are characters that just start strong as well as teams that are very offensive what make it difficult once the game starts snowballing away from you. So is this something that needs to be addressed? Has anyone else noticed these slower going characters that get much better late game?

I like that this game makes me think of all these factors and i often am the last person to choose a character on my team because i look for what role is needed and what characters work well together. It is a sign of a good game that i want to create a team that can succeed but i am also worried that maximizing a better team well become a focus for ranked play. Anyone want to chime in?

Someone always has to come first, and someone always has to come last. It’s impossible to perfectly balance characters, and no matter what you do some will be better and more popular than others.

That being said, we’ve only seen 2 of the PvP modes, and that ‘Capture Maps’ thing in the menu is intriguing. Meltdown and Incursion are different enough to assume different play in that mode as well, so the characters that are worse in the modes we’ve seen so far will perhaps be better suited to others.

I definitely agree with everything you said, I just like thinking about this games future. I am very excited to see how it changes and grows. My biggest concern is like with a lot of other games that have a hero system, eventually there are just to many heroes out there and the newer ones are usually the best ones. Gearbox has not really said much on release schedule and where they think this game will go in the long term but i am optimistic about it success.

I also very much like that the different game modes can often favor one type of character over another. The more diversity of what you can do in these matches really gives there characters new worth and team up. When i saw the developers on youtube play Attikus they were on a capture the points map and they were doing great with him.

If its one thing we have In common its that we wait for other players to select characters and see what role is needed. ITS a good habbit man, anyways I agree with most of what you said except for character difficulty, the way that gearbox labeled the difficulty for BB characters, for example, why do I feel attikus is hard to learn when gearbox labeled him easy, on the flip side I find Ghalt easy to use when he is labeled complex. In my opinion, no character is too complex, advance nor easy, you just have to get to know them. Lastly the difficulty labels doesn’t make em any better or worse.

I also wait last too! What’s good about all this that has you thinking, is that everyone will know how to play against the commons (Rath, Orendi, O.M.), how to counter them. I often see people flailing against Mellick and Deande users because one play through with them and most people think “garbage…move along”. While those who stay with them for a game or two say, "oh…that’s how they are used…"Let’s be honest, we all know how to fight against Oscar Mike, the pleasure how fighting him EVERY match has taught us. In my MOBA experience, every character should be taken as a serious threat and when there are garbage characters it’s pretty clear by the community. Fortunately I think Gearbox will keep an ear up against its community and be looking for these kinds of things.

So true about Mellka, only if they knew I’m on a hot streak!

I’m sticking mainly to Caldarius, Toby, and Deande for the exact reason pmanley explained: people can’t play against them. Many an Oscar Mike have tried to kill my shield as I shred their health, and I’ve gotten like 5 kills from just clone explosions.

I used to do this more, but I found myself often just feeling obliged to play Miko, and I got kinda tired of that so I don’t do it as much now.

And Montana is advanced while Whiskey is easy.

Right now I think the general trend is that the most commonly seen characters are just the ones that people unlock early
