What could have been will never be: BL3

Welcome to my list of features that I have noticed have been abandoned/Forgotten when creating BL3.

Quest Rewards: simply put in the previous games BL1,BL2 & TPS you would receive basic information when you accept the quest such as: IF YOU WILL GET ANYTHING FROM DOING THE QUEST. BL3 removed this feature because you don’t need to know that silly stuff?!

BL1:

BL2/TPS

is

BL3: This quest rewards you with a Jacobs pistol! But you wouldn’t know because it give no information.

Challenges: BL1 challenges we’re a great way for early XP and was a cool reason to kill things in ways you normals wouldn’t.
BL2 amped it up by adding tons more! While also rewarding you with a trophy/Achievement along with customization for your characters.
BL3: challenges reward you Eridum with no trophy or achievement or things to unlock for your character (That’s what Eridum is used for)

The Pre Sequel: Features that are NO MORE, RIP good times…

Viewing Other people’s/Friends Gear:

OZ Kit/Double jump mechanic:

Glitch Rarity:

The Grinder:

Miss Moxxi Cocktails:

Add on Characters: Personally I thought BL3 would alow us to play as any of the past vault hunters from any of the games… too much work for not enough money I guess

Agree:

  • Reward type icons: I do miss not knowing what kind of reward I’m in for: BL2/TPS had it perfect with a generic item icon with rarity. You didn’t know exactly what you’d get, but if you wanted to save side missions with weapon rewards for later in the game when you’re at a higher level, you could tell which ones to pass. Now (without research) we find out the hard way when the reward turns out to be a great-but-now-underleveled weapon.

  • Viewing other people’s gear - is this still a thing? I thought we could see other people’s build and rank, but I only play solo, so never used that feature myself in any franchise. Given how “social” they’re trying to make BL3, I’m surprised this isn’t a thing.

  • Grinder - I didn’t really care for it, but given how positive reception seemed to be, I’m surprised it didn’t come back?

    Up for debate:

  • Moxxi’s Cocktails - instead we have the Borderlands Science machine. It works, and I can save my special currency for other stuff. To be fair, there was more variety with the Cocktails though.

  • Challenges - BL3 kind of added the best of both worlds with Challenges (with a base reward) and Guardian Rank (with bonus stats and toggleable perks). I think the Challenges felt too much like farming for some players, where tying Guardian Rank to a separate XP bar means people can earn those bits however they want. Did I mention they were toggleable? That’s such an an awesome feature, even though I never turn any of them off. Also, the recent addition of the Vault Cards adds another set of challenges to this mix with some great rewards.

    To add:

  • Booster auto pickup… still seems like a short-term fix for the altered booster arc where the player could catch it out of the air, so there was some risk/reward there (though I do enjoy abusing this with Distributed Denial and a booster shield).

  • Damage number presentation - the spray pattern and colors of the damage numbers is pretty sketchy in BL3. It was pretty perfect (I thought) in BL2/TPS, but in BL3, the colors/elements are still hard to tell apart, and they overlap so much that we have to use Photo Mode to try to squirm around to see the hidden number.

  • Mayhem Modifiers - they do make things more hectic, but I’m not sure how many people like them (or more precisely: the random selection process). If these were individually toggleable, I think there would be more adoption. Also, for the players who are actually after some mayhem, being able to toggle these in any combination they like (with the corresponding stat changes) would be nice. Like if you turned on all the Very Hard modifiers, it’d be a slog, but the XP/Eridium/Loot quality would be through the roof.

I H-A-T-E (with white hot passion) the whole mayhem system. Mayhem 1.0 was bearable, but the current system sucks and the options within are just plain awful. I currently play M11 in order to not to have to deal with them.
