Ok just been playing it - and for the most part enjoying it.
However agree with the comments in the main. Thing is the issues arenât missing because theyâve been improved upon, theyâre just not there. And as HW1 was so perfect in the first place, clealry playtested a lot and balanced etc itâs a real shame as itâs a lesser game without them.
In the four hours Iâve played before AVG decided to delete the exec file (now waiting for it to reinstallâŚsigh) these are my points (not in order of importance).
1: Formations - clearly not working.
2: Repair - clearly not working.
3: Fighters/corvettes seem pretty ineffective now.
4: Harvesters donât seem to be able to find RUs and constantly stop and sit there before I click on them and press H.
5: Bit easy in most cases - whatâs happened at Kadash? I remember this being a white knuckle ride in the original.
6: Mission one - canât repair cryo trays so impossible not to lose one. âCapturedâ all frigates, none were âcapturedâ.
7: x stay docked. Yes it would be nice if this remained active past a hyperspace. Then my fleet of attack bombers wouldnât have launched and lined up and died almost instantly while the game was talking to me and stopping me giving orders⌠Then again I only built them to shoot up the Kadeshi mothership so it didnât ram my capital ships like in the original. Only in remastered the Kadeshi motherships just sit there and die (unless theyâre immortal until you trigger a cutscene or similar⌠did anyone playtest this shizzle?)#
8: Captured Taidan carrier early doors. After it was launched by Mothership a squadron of taidan fighters launched from it and just sat there. And it doesnât seem able to build anything⌠all goodâŚ
This is not to say itâs in any way a disaster - just niggles which add up to it not being as good as the original - which is sad as the originalâs 10+ years old now - and my all time favourite game.

Iâm sure they can make the support frigate beam to work again. The harvest collectors use a beam so how difficult can it be to add it to the support frigate to heal capital ships and corvettes and each other. Few lines of code and done.
How can the devs strip Homeworld of all the goods and be happy with the release. I wonder.

Personally, Iâm exorbitantly happy that GBX AND BBI (which, by the way, is mostly comprised of original Homeworld Devs) brought back the game at all. Period.
Letâs show a little more gratitude. GBX could have let the IP sit around on a shelf for another 16 years. Letâs be happy itâs out and that theyâre actively working on it so it can conform to our rabid expectations. This is not a one-and-done release.

No, what they did is they gave HW1 resource collectors a fancy effect on top of HW2 harvesting behavior to make it look slightly less like HW2 harvesting behavior.

Yeah, most of the behaviour is down to the HW2 engine. Which while graphically more advanced and infinitely more modern, from a gameplay standpoint it lost a lot of the touches that made the original game so unique. Things like ships that arenât piloted by kittens, intent on getting themselves into bother or ignoring your commands.
HW1âs ships acted like a team and they all had a sensible logic to them (guarding, healing and formations all just worked as you would hope they would) while HW2 felt like the pilots had been replaced with cats. They just wander off and do their own thing and need constant micromanaging to stop them from dying, which is ironic considering the raft of changes Relic made were intended to minimise micro.

Honestly - can somebody make a âcats as pilotsâ Mod?!
- selects units and assigns them to group 1
- âMr Fluffy joining group one, meowâ
or
- selects mothership
- âMeowshipâ
or
- starts HW1 mission 03
- âThe yarn is gone, the dogs took all of our yarnâŚâ

Sajuuk as a giant laser-pen: Only way to make them actually follow an objective.

On this, I assume KerrAvon means mission 3, and it depends on how many Assault Frigates the game spawns for the mission due to your fleet size. I only had two spawn on my play-through, and it was relatively easy for me to get a flight of salvagettes to lock down the frigates before they could destroy one of the cryo trays.
I personally didnât mind the fact the ships were âconsumedâ on return to the Mothership- at least they give you the resources of the captured vessels for that mission. Better than capturing that Carrier that was also mentioned and not being able to retire it until youâve jumped with it in your fleet.

Yes meant mission three - on my run through there were four frigates and the first cryo died very quickly. The frigates were ridiculously easy to capture tho. (and get the rus for obv).

They had already delayed it a few months from November. I for one appreciate not waiting longer.
If it had been âperfectâ then weâd be waiting out still like May or something.

Transfer the classic homeworld on the HW2 engine, unfortunately turned into a complete catastrophe for this unique game. This cannot be allowed, because at one point Gearbox destroyed epic game, also with hopes of many people who have long been waiting this remake.
I think it was necessary to restore the old engine, or not to do a remake of the first game at all.

Iâd settle for âfunctioning as originally designed.â Or even ânon-early-beta release.â
If they wanted to do a âHey, this thingâs not ready for prime time so weâre going public early access for the folks whoâve already paid for it!â theyâd look like heroes. Even if release was pushed off until May, theyâd have had a great line, âYou guys are helping to speed launch!â
But thatâs not what happened.
What happened is that they released a game as a remastering that didnât even replicate the functionality â not only gameplay but functionality â of one half, possibly more given the fanbase, of the games they intended to remaster and sold as remastered. Then they put that out as the final product theyâre selling. Now weâre getting patches to fix what anyone whoâd ever played any of the source material would have known was broken within 5min of starting, and the consumer purchasers are hoping that if Gearbox canât fix it, modders will devote themselves to working with an engine supposedly having been beaten on for over a couple years which doesnât have real documentation for its most important data structures.
I have been wrestling with being upbeat, but the more I follow dev posts, the more I just feel kind of jerked around. Acknowledgement that strikecraft movement for HW1 vehicles is borked? Not really. Concern that the inherent mismatch between strike group fightercraft in HW2 and fightercraft in HW1 is an intractable problem without some means of properly preserving the latter? Not in there. The fact that a lot of the mouseovers for âWhat is X Good Against and Weak Againstâ are just horribly broken and wrong at this point? Not a murmur.
Iâm not even talking about balancing multiplayer. (Thatâs explicitly beta.) I mean basic campaign functionality.
They are not helping me feel good about this.

I couldnât like this fast enough.
Basically my problem is that HW1 Remastered plays nothing like HW1. All of my original HW1 tactics no longer work or work against me.
I always played a very salvage heavy game, but now captured ships seem both buggy and play against you with the new level-scaling system.
The good news is that HW2 Remastered is near perfect. And HW1 classic now works out-of-the-box.

Look, Gearbox, itâs really easy to get the magic beams right: Donât do them like youâve done them, theyâre not âdock at salvage point, apply healingâ.
Code them like weapons. Make the weapon only target friendlies. Give it a short range (about the length of a support frigate) and have it instead of damaging, heal the target. Then stick all that inside the power command, so when you tell a support frigate to heal a target it goes âMust inflict +health on allied target with heal beam until allied targetâs HP is at maxâ
If you have the code for move attacking and the like, then you can get the frigates/corvettes to stay near their heal target. Even better you can very easily set it up so they can heal groups and will cycle between the most damaged ships based on priority.
You can also use this for harvesters.
