I still have the original CD from that box of Chex cereal from the 90s, but this is a download (getting that CD software to run on modern systems is pretty rough). Fans took the reins for keeping it going, first porting it to a Doom engine made to run on modern systems and other fixes when one of the developers (Charles Jacobi) spun up a full Chex Quest 1, 2, and 3 compiled into a single executable that runs just fine (which is what I’m actually playing here).
Fired up some Alice Madness Returns. My old rig would choke when I’d fire up the pepper grinder, but this one runs right through it. It’s a gorgeous game, but at no point is the overhead of manual camera management not a stone in my shoe (and I had to de-consolize it to get the controls to work and a framerate higher than 31 by tweaking the .ini files).
Been hammering away at leveling up Sylvanas. Recently got to level 27 with her. The goal is to hit 50 before the end of the year. She received some buffs last patch: A rather noticeable 100 hp being the biggest, which has made my life easier, along with a buff to a skill that had been lagging since the minor rework she received. I still think it needs another buff but I have not had optimal conditions to get a ridiculous amount of stacks with it.
For the uninitiated - if you play this on PC and deviate from the stock button bindings, you will probably need to manually edit your .INI files to get the the umbrella to work (plus you need to add a toggle to the end of the line for it to work anyway). I wonder why they haven’t patched what appears to otherwise be such a simple thing that can kind of break the game.
Now that I have the combat mechanics down (camera management mostly… focus switching, dodging while not being able to see the enemy, moving around without being able to see where I’m going, turning focus on and off so the camera points the right way), it’s way more fun than the first two times I played it, but still… what’s the player’s return on all that camera management for the combat?
If you shrink and walk next to an edge in the game geometry, you get stuck small until you walk away from it. Here I stepped into a shrinking violet for some health, when Physx boulders landed nearby. They presented an edge, which locked me in the flower; you can’t move when in the flower, and you can’t stand up with an edge nearby.
When she turns around to face toward or away from the camera, it’s instant, and the Physx engine appears to treat it so - doing this throws her hair up as if she literally spun around at a few hundred miles an hour.
Game is really good.
Love the music and atmosphere.

After completing the Dark Brotherhood line with Daerk Elthius, it’s been back to my Thieves Guild Khajiit. Having a bit of an issue in that since hitting level 30, I’ve been running into lots of mages dual-wiedling fireballs, and getting completely roasted. So, I’ve been levelling up a bit more and sticking some points elsewhere than pickpocket and sneak. I’ll have to grab some screen shots soon, but I’m also collecting all the Daedric artefacts with this character.
I don’t think this occurred to me. Time to make sure I have that CD backed up! Are they not selling it anymore? What a weird fate for such a great game.
I don’t think the first one was ever available on it’s own. IIRC you could get the first game, if you pre-ordered the second one, or bought a deluxe edition of the second game.
But, it’s not on Steam, Origin or GoG.
Went back to Killing Floor 2 and did all the Seasonal Challenges !
The Weekly Challenge was a massive pain in the backside though …
Beefcake is asinine. Beefcake is annoying. Beefcake is hard.
The only perk I have at Level 15+ is Berserker, and it’s probably the worst perk for this bloody Weekly. Since you’re built to take damage, Zeds just get bigger and bigger and they quickly corner you (because of how beefy and massive they become) and you die, and this also affects bosses of all things. Managed to win twice out of 7 tries, and all of them were up to Boss Wave … I’m just happy this is over.
Now I get to play with the Battleaxe … ohohoho that is some amazing stuff.
