I was thinking the high level Heroes you unlock were gonna be amazing. Not the case, El Dragon, Attikus, Caldarius and Mellka were total garbage in PVP. Was Gearbox hiding them with high level unlocks so people wouldn’t see how bad they are? Now I’m worried when I unlock Kleese and Ghalt.
Man all depends on ur play style , I play on ps4 beta now rank 46 totally in love with el dragon he fits my play style never finish a match with negative k.d. And never less then 10 kills. Deande works great for me to … In other hand I’m bad with the initials like rath . My nyck in the ps4 is Bullet09mm if ur interested u can add me we do some matches together and share tactics about those characters
Seems to be the case, I know they want to mirror progression but for the purposes of the data analysis they should have some these characters open sooner than later.
Caldarius is squishy as hell, BTW. I can only assume he’s bugged to hell because he’s certainly no glass cannon. El dragon hits like a truck if you spend a little time minion farming to boost his stacks.

El Dragon is the toppest of Top Tier only next to maybe Ambra right now
Its not like as you gain levels you gain access to “better” battleborn.
How well you do with any given battleborn is in direct relation to your skill and playstyle. Don’t label something trash simply because you don’t have the kit to make it shine.
Caldarius and El Dragon? They are really good once you unlock the secret to making them work.
i would suggest putting in the work to find a way to unlock a character, caldarius is worth it

Pro caldarius here. Only played him in the CTT and dear god did I destroy EVERYTHING. You need to put time into him to get good.
Once you understand the mix between gun and blade and when to use them accordingly you will out-box any hero, melee or ranged.
I will admit hes really tough to master and may seem as “trash” when you take him out of the box first time around. Thing is you need to understand his movement, jumping, attacks and which ones to use and when. Once you get the hang of it, you’re going to have too much fun.
When you do, you’re going to never die and murder everyone. The amount of mobility he has allows you to overextend hardcore and come out alive almost every time.
I got really mad when I saw I pretty much cant unlock him in the beta unless I grind hardcore (Which I cant do because I don’t have freetime) to rank 28. I am seriously hoping they unlock all of them at some point so I can enjoy playing him again.

Ghalt’s been wrecking my face with his basic attack, even in bots mode. Kleese is meh, Mellka is pretty fun, although I have been having bad games with her lately, and Caldarius feels weak, in my opinion. Haven’t played as El Dragon or Attikus yet.
Haven’t played the others but i just played against Caldarius and he has a lot of potencial, he’s HUGELY mobile and can flee from combat as none other. He was a PITA to play against him specially on Meltdown since he could just hoard all shards and place turrets behind us so easily, i only managed to kill him once ( he only died once ) and that was by chance. I can’t wait to play with him and use some guerrilla tactics of hit n run.
I would say that this game is a bit like Smash or LoL where any character can be top tier/high level if you know how to play as them.

Kleese requires some cover for sure but he definitely Isn’t weak. Don’t spec to use your shields as damage and keep rifts together where they can’t shoot them. Use a damage reduction gear and with four linked rifts you can pretty much eat any one person’s damage. I even get in front of the rifts to spare them the damage. I’m probably 80 percent win on incursion with him.

Meant to reply to this post.
From what I’ve played (and seen) Attikus is the only one that truly needs attention… he was quite difficult to do anything with, especially against new players simply because they get a bunch of ranged options and that is what tears him apart. Montana is tough for him but that would be ok; the real issue was against Galilea, who should not put out so much damage while also stunning. Galilea and Rath usually would roll together and all it takes is Galilea stunning then the two of them rip Attikus apart before he can react. Also his huge size makes leaping / running away unpredictable at best.
I could go on but he has a whole lot of negative traits in this game compared to abilities that are only so-so. His damage output and life steal are the only real benefits and they require leveling up so he only matters in the late game. Then he is pretty decent.
I have to respectfully disagree with the OP. I found Mellka and Deande both very good. While, they did require more training to get the hang out, i found them worth it once you get their basics down.

They are not trash, but all of hose characters require alot of knowledge, skill and movement. Means those are AWESOME if you can ptlay them right.
To many people expect to pick a char, jump into the arena and win, before they try any skills, movement and gameplay. No wonder they think certain chars are bad.
For example Thorn: She´s a beast, but I play her like crap, because her movement/playabilty is not my style.
Yet I saw awesome Thorns rocking everything, because they knew how to do it.
It will be the same for high-level chars, don´t worry. Just exercise a bit and good movement & timing will turn any char into a badass.

I suspect it is intentional to encourage more familiarity with the game before people get the characters that are trickier to use well. The earlier characters often tend more toward ones that can do well just shooting accurately and ability strategy matters less.

I don’t think they are trash, I think they are well balanced and many of the later unlocks have a learning curve as opposed to the base characters who are simple to learn and easy to use. If the later unlocks were significantly better than the earlier ones then there would be no incentive to use them except to unlock the better characters, and higher level players would crush lower level ones due to having unlocked characters that are better.
By the time you unlock the later characters it is safe to assume that you have played a lot and have some experience playing different characters in different ways, by this time you are ready for the more advanced and difficult to master characters whereas if you used say Deande or Caldarius on your first time playing you would likely underperform and feel that you are either no good at the game or that the game is no good.

That doesn’t mean that the earlier characters are bad either, they’re just easier to use. It’s up to you if you want to challenge yourself on a tough character or continue with one that you like and enjoy using. All characters in this game are good if you take the time to learn how and why.
