You’re thinking about it the wrong way, this is a very common reward and incentive structure built into many competitive and multi player experiences (and single player too). Not to be dismissive, but Battleborn has relatively low unlock requirements compared to many others.
I wanted to and I’m a full time student in college. It allows me to get a lot of playability out of the game and (though it can take a while to unlock Ghalt or Deande) the characters are well worth it. CoD has it so you only have like 3 guns to start with and you need to unlock others through ranks. I think of this the same way. It is incentive to keep coming back and I’ve enjoyed every minute of killing thralls to unlock Attikus.
I don’t mind unlocking the characters that much, I could speculate that the unlock system is there to not overwhelm new players with all the different characters and playstyles. It feels grindy and boring tough if you need an eternity to play the charakter that you want to play the most.
On the other hand, maybe some player finds while unlocking the characters other playstyles and characters that he loves.
Being forced to play other character contributes to a better understanding of more characters and their strength and weaknesses.
just my speculation
I don’t mind, but I can see why its annoying
Should all the gear pickups also be unlocked from the start?
Are you new to video games?
If you’re saying you should be able to have everything unlocked because you payed implies a Pay2win game. Luckily, Battleborn is not that at all. Everything in the game (aside from dlc) can be unlocked through gameplay. This is what separates battleborn from other games coughoverwatchcough because it gives the players something to work towards. Like previously stated, it’s an award/incentive system.
I, along with others, am very glad that we can play to unlock everything, because when you’re thrown into a game and already have everything unlocked, you lose incentive to play very quickly.
I don’t even know 1 game where it has all characters and abilities unlocked day 1…
Overwatch
dota
OK I now know of 2 lol, still not many!
I unlocked at least 4 characters in my first play session and I am a casual gamer these days. The unlock requirements are pretty low. If anything its allows you some time to master these characters while unlocking others. I never thought I would like Orendi until I used her a couple times while unlocking Toby and now she is one of my favorite characters.
Regardless, those are 2 games that are competing with battleborn. Dota and battleborn aren’t really gonna be “going at it”, but overwatch is a huge competitor, and it’s very important that Battleborn sets itself apart from it.
It already has. It has a multiplayer campaign mode, a progression system, a gear system, buildable items, and character unlocks.
if you pay for smites founder pack, you also get all charakter unlocked instantly… I think paragon unlocks also all characters instantly
I’m not saying that battleborn should do the same, I dont mind unlocking characters
I’m not saying outside-game progression is the only thing that sets Battleborn apart, but it definitely is an important contribution to what makes it unique.
I happen to love unlock systems in games as they give me things to work towards. A lot of these characters I probably wouldn’t even be trying if I didn’t need to play some of them to unlock additional characters. It adds lifetime to the game for me and my g/f and I are having a blast playing through story and working on unlocking all sorts of things.
Quite honestly it’s good to have variety. Otherwise you have these trends that people complain about, things going back and forth. For example in this particular issue you would have all of a sudden every game has everything unlocked from the start and there is no progression challenge because that’s the lowest common denominator of what the loudest voices are saying and then it changes where some game dares to be different and starts instituting unlocks as a selling point, then every game starts doing it again.
[Sorry if this is not entirely making sense, in a hurry]
I’ve seen this complaint a number of times and I just don’t get it. You start with a nice selection of characters that are simple to play. Just be playing the game without any particular intent, you will continue to unlock new characters at a nice clip and have lots of new ones to try. Letting people who had no idea what they were doing with the basic mechanics start out with some of the more difficult characters would be a great way to frustrate people.
This is a game people could get hundreds or even thousands of hours of enjoyment out of, yet a few at the start to unlock this character or that is too much?
Seriously this.
Games are not supposed to hand you stuff on a platter. The whole microtransaction thing has made people forget about the period before it where we had to grind or accomplish certain feats to unlock characters.
I have to disagree with you here. I have a family and a full time job and I enjoy the unlock system. If it was all given to me from the start this game would grow very stale very quickly.
Other than Ghalt and Deande, the characters are quite easy to unlock.
As much as the unlocking is a pain, I do think it adds to longevity for the game and will hopefully keep a stable playerbase around for some time.
