So that’s it. It’s not free-to-play game, it’s buy-to-play. Okay, I’m ok with thing that we need to open characters, but why, why Thorn is free from 1 LVL, some characters require challenge “win 5 matches as Rogue” is done, but another require 40+ LVL and completing story mode missions on Advanced difficulty? Why? It’s not an equeal requirements. Okay, Gearbox may explain that people have to improve their skills or whatever. But I don’t think all the characters which requires high level and story progress are skill-demanding. It’s artificial limits, and shouldn’t be in BtP game.
OKAY, If you buy the game you probably have time to level up and complete story mode. But in the beta test we have not so much time to level up to get liked characters. It’s beta, everything should be UNLOCKED for testing, isn’t it?
It’s really annoying to see Gearbox did something illogical and stupidly, for beta at least.

You do know that each locked character has 2 ways to be unlocked?
Either ranking up or doing their challenge.

Still, we’re supposed to test stuff. You can’t test if the locked battleborn are balanced when you can’t access them.
This means a few characters will be balanced, while a few of them will have too little gameplay data gathered for reliable stats.
I agree with this. While I in no way think this should be the case in the game proper, they should definitely have at least one day where all of the characters are unlocked in the beta, just to gather data and feedback from the user base as a whole. How will we know if Ghalt or Mellka or broken if only a handful of people have time to use them extensively? Personally, I’ve tried my best to devote as much time and energy as I could into the beta, but even with that, I’m never going to make rank 40 by the end of it. One day for the entire userbase to try everyone out and see what improvements could be made would be a godsend, IMO.
EDIT: This probably belongs in the beta-specific forum, whomever has the power to do so.
I know that. But some characters can be unlocked easy, others not. It’s not fair move by Gearbox, for beta atleast. I already tested some characters at previous beta (or alpha) in 2015, so I want to try new characters added, how they balanced in relation to “old” ones. I don’t want to beat 40 LVL (it’s really long story) for Ghalt, so I may want to complete challenge, but it’s not available in beta because it hasn’t all required missions packed in. You say it’s fair? I think not.

This is my biggest issue with Battleborn at the moment, and why I am not pre-ordering or planning to buy until there is a significant price drop, or this is fixed some how. I played Ambra in the Closed Technical Test, and LOVED her, and could not get a feel for any of the others available at that time. While I understand her Command Rank req is ‘only’ 14, compared to others, I* have no idea what this challenge: “Win 5 matches as a Jennerit Character” means. WTB context for that.
Anyways while I THOUGHT I was sold on this game after playing Ambra during the CTT, not being able to have her right away, however seeing as GBX wants me to shell out $60.00 and use a ‘F2P style’ unlock system, to play who I want to play. Needless to say it leaves me very much concerned whether or not the initial ‘investment’ will actually be worth anything, other than sooner access to the product, that is set up to be F2P if they don;t get the results they want. I’m not desperate to play this, especially when I’m not enjoying my Open Beta experience currently, as I’m having to grind to get to who I want to play as to see if the Magic is still there.
This^
I think people should freely choose what they want to test. If characters already in the game, why we must grind things out to unlock them if we play at the beta stage? For me, who played CTT too, it seems ridiculous to play again on characters which I already tested in terms of balance, gearbox items influence, snowball etc. I don’t want to waste my time for needless actions such as grind EXP because some challenges aren’t supposed to completeable.
Not to mention, some people are ONLY buying the game to play as a character that THEY want to play. If this UNLOCK system is in live, I don’t see many people ENJOYING grinding to 38 just to play the character that appeals to them.
If they would like to stick to this method, they need a way for people to unlock at least ONE character of their choice for FREE.
It’s probably so people don’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of playable characters. I know starting to play dota was awful because I couldn’t make up my mind on who to play.
That’s kinda irrelevant when the game has a built in character info tab as well as resources like the internet. @_@ So I personally don’t see why that would be a reason.
Other characters need to be tested. If anything it would work in their favor since new players can play everything a feel like they are excited to unlock (blank).
I get what everyone on this post is saying. I think it’s a good idea that gearbox limited the characters available at the start. It makes you learn characters strengths and weaknesses as you go and maybe a character you normally wouldn’t play. I’m not really into the support role, but I tried out miko and he/she’s actually not bad.
I’ve tested games before, world of warships and master of Orion if you’ve heard of them. Testing games is more than playing just the characters you want. It’s about testing if the progression feels right, letting the developers know about bugs, and character balance.
Exactly. I want to test all content, not only minor part of it. Not everyone has time to get 30+ LVL to unlock content and then test it.
I’m ok with general idea, but I don’t really understand why it’s here in beta. Some challenges aren’t even completeable, so there’s only one way to level up. Some characters have really high lever requirements for beta period. It’s just annoying the people here.

Thats fine and all, however ‘Open Beta’ is generally the dry run s to speak before the release of what the final product will be, and generally gives prospective buyers a chance to try before they buy. That said, those of us with gripes here, likely will be the same, post official release.
EDIT: This is basically our last chance to give feedback before release, in hopes it gets noticed.
We don’t know what their plans are for the open beta, perhaps they will unlock everything for a day or two to give people a chance to try everything out.
I love the progression system and its great that i have to actually work to get to some characters. If Orendi was locked behind a LVL40 wall or behind a “get 100 assists” then you bet i’d pickup a support character and lay down some serious assists or learn another character so i can grind out to 40.
Most paid games have some sort of progression… COD for their guns… Battlefield for their kit equipment… etc.
want to talk about a real grind? a certain F2P MOBA that requires 250+ games to unlock a character using their ingame system while also simultaneously needing to use that ingame system to unlock gear/runes.
The developers need to see how well people are doing with what is essentially the full game. give them a chance to do it
Did you even read this topic? Really you said that? Oh my god.
I say it again. I want to play for example Ghalt or Deande. They have two ways to be unlocked: 38-40 LVL or Challenges which require completing STORY MISSIONS, which aren’t in beta! There only one way to grind 40 levels! If you can’t understand this I’m sorry, I shoudn’t start topics in such place.
Impatience? It’s simple logic. Why content must to be locked in BETA? In Overwatch beta all the characters are unlocked by default. It’s the BETA TEST, not final product. Why I have to waste my time to unlock characters I want to test? Jeez.
Don’t compare F2P mobas or even mmos with BB. In fact BB is singleplayer game, B2P, with multiplayer.
Previous system when people have to buy the characters to unlock them was really good. You don’t need to level up or complete stupid challenges such as Deande and Ghalt have. I have a few coins, and I can buy any character. Unlocking system is good for singleplayer, not for multiplayer.
Also I’m pretty much sure there will be wipe, so no progress will be carried over to full game. Do YOU want to beat 40 LVL and then lost your progress, your time, your nerves, just for testing character you really want to test? There’s no other way to unlock it. Huh? I think not.
Actually, i would. I know full well that I’m taking part in a beta so i can help the developers gain a greater understanding about the game i want to play.
i intend to get to the highest level and master of any champion that i can get my hands on before the 18th. then, im going to do it again when i actually have the game in its final form.
describe battleborn how you want, single player is a mode, like the multiplayer. what you gain in single player, transfers to real XP and real coins and challenges.
Therein lies the real kicker, if you want a certain character, there are 2 ways to get them.
Complete the challenge. Gain the reward.
You’re wrong. There are not always two ways to get a character. It’s a beta, and it doesn’t have full story mission pack, so Ghalt and Deande can be unlocked only by leveling up. I’m ok with that system in release build of BB. But not in beta. It’s wrong.

Hi guys,
Let’s steer the conversation back onto the game and away from other forum users, please.
