You. Will. Die. Quite. A. Lot (BL2 NVHM Challenge!)

Perhaps this is a well known fact, but perhaps it isn’t. Some areas can be entered before the main story takes you there. Due to a major brainfart, I once entered Opportunity long before I had to go there. This led to the level of that area being permanently set. I hardly got any XP at all once the main story took me there.

Perhaps this is something that could be exploited in this challenge? When you get to Three Horns Divide, you should be able to go directly to Three Horns Valley. And once you’re there, The Dust should also be accessible. The Dust will lead you to the Highlands, and from there you can, enter Opportunity, WEP and Thousand Cuts. Assuming these areas aren’t locked somehow.

Eridium Blight is locked early on, and I don’t know about Tundra Express.

Good news is that JSJ is at the Highlands in pursuit of reaching a flying city. The bad news is Hot loaders- can’t get past them w/o dying (at least not yet). At level 11 most of his gear is still level 8, which isn’t helping much. Options are to farm previous areas for on level gear (includes the Dust for a corrosive Gwen’s Head and Savage Lee for an UH), do the Marcus mission with the elemental guns and stop when he gets to corrosive and using Gold keys- which might be a bit of a problem considering that the gold key chest is in Sanctuary and JSJ isn’t, soooo…

As it so happens, I have a random old Axton who is at level 8 and had just arrived at Sanctuary when I last left him (he hasn’t even talked to Scooter yet). I ran around with him to see which maps I could get to… Tundra Express is locked. Can get all the way to the Dust but the exit to the Highlands is locked. Lynchwood is available. (And of course Eridium Blight is locked.)

If you took Clan Wars that would unlock on the first mission, since you have to blow up the still just outside Overlook.

Guess I’ll roll a new toon to test how much you can unlock then! :stuck_out_tongue:

OK! Idea… What if it’s possible to get to the “next” areas once the previous areas have been unlocked by story progress. Three Horns Divide and Valley are unlocked by your progress, and you can get to the Dust. Maybe try for the Highlands once the Dust has been “unlocked” by story. And then once the Highlands are unlocked by story, the next areas might be available. Just a thought…

Eridium Blight will stay locked until it’s time to go there.

Yeppers I was just thinking this is something I was gonna do the next time I feel like going through the story again in NVHM (seeing how many maps are unlocked as I make progress through the story.)

I seem to remember trying to get to Thousand Cuts ‘early’ in one playthrough, and it was locked out (could be wrong though.)

Junior Senior Jr. has reached WEP at level 12 to take on level 20+ enemies- ouch. Farmed the Dust for gear- it was still at his level (which was 11 before the Battle of Overlook started). Found a nice fire Gwen’s head but sold it for the Twin Gwen’s Head he found instead- very useful to deal with loaders in lieu of a corrosive weapon. A bit of warning- once you reach Sanctuary gear in the Dust levels up to the 14-16 range so if you want it for levels 11-12 get it now. As for reaching other maps I could access the Highlands thru the Dust and even reach the area where the gluttonous thresher spawns but the blast doors won’t open- grenade jumping over the walls might work but it looks like you would still have to return to the starting point on the map to tick off the mission start. Also if you’re having trouble with the constructor…

Never knew you could do that- I think I’ll put it in the Random Information thread. Now to find a way to survive the loaders long enough for the gate to the WEP docks to open…

Finally killed Jack and ended with 350830 XP at Level 22.14 with time spent 1:21:25:45. My main problem was killing enemies that I should have just run away from or let them kill me. It is kind of like playing Gaige. “Don’t reload, Don’t reload, Don’t reload”, except now it is “Don’t FFYL, Don’t FFYL, Don’t FFYL”. Killing the weakest enemy while in FFYL is as ingrained as reloading. I learned quite a bit that will make the next run better.

Most of the whole boring 45 hours in 28 videos are here (some parts are missing when my internet feed to twitch failed):
YWDQALC-NVHM-02

I may have spent half that time opening boxes and checking vendors. I finished the 2500 “Open Pandora’s Boxes” challenge right at level 11.

Started on August 20, and finished September 15. From the OP:

At least The Warrior dropped a L30 Social Conference Call.

Awesome!

Surprisingly I didn’t had too much troubles adjusting to not reloading even if I was a reload freak atm. But not Fighting For Your Life?

You guys & gals are awesome!
I just can’t picture myself dying over and over again. At the same spot and having to start the area from scratch.
Over and over again…
That’s one of the major reason why I wasn’t interested in shooters and why I’m not rushing for Peak Runs.

Great runs so far. Keep it up!

Nice work! What build were you using? I found Cloud Kill essential for the last fight!

I couldn’t get past the first constructor in Thousand Cuts at level 15. I decided that I had to get Cloud Kill, so farmed for more XP for level 16 to get past it. I had points in Immolate, but now that I don’t want FFYL skills, I’ll probably pick Flicker over Helios. I’m guessing that Helios might kill some enemies that I don’t want the XP for, and Flicker will only affect the enemies that I target.

The rest of the skills went into Ward and Accelerate. I switched between WIld Cat and Guarded Warder COMs depending on whether I was fighting enemies or running past them. I had lucked into a L20 corrosive Hyperion corporate plasma caster, which went well with the Cat COM, so that vendor farming paid off.

Having the Marcus’s Rock, Paper, Genocide: Slag Weapons! Maliwan pistol helped, too. Since Sanctuary was at level 28 when I entered Hero’s Pass, it allows you to use a level 28 weapon when you are only level 20. But most of my pistol ammo went to my Level 9 Unkempt Harold for killing crystalisks that got too close. I meant to bring a Law, but forgot it.

I was at level 20.36 when I entered Hero’s Pass.

Junior Senior Jr has returned to the task of trying to reach Bloodwing and in that regard I decided to do the Rock, Paper, Genocide tests for Marcus, which allowed him to ding level 13. On the bright side this gave him a corrosive weapon that allowed him access to the shipyard, another skill point and let him equip a level 13 cooldown relic. On the down side having a shield with only a 252 capacity sucks. Finally used one of his Gold Keys and got a shock Vladof AR with melee attachment and another Hyperion Diversification shotty, which should come in handy. Will do Clappy’s Secret Stash (but not turn it in- don’t want the XP) so that my other VH’s can leave behind any Bunny RL, WTF shields or duplicate legendary class mods with worse stats than what they use so as to mitigate the sure to be constant respawn fees  More attempts will be made this weekend…

Well- that was… fun  After getting past the loaders and into Bloodwing’s enclosure (following several respawns) JSJ finally made it to Bloodwing at level 14.5. After another handful of respawns he left with the Claptrap upgrade and also at level 15.5ish (killing Bloodwing- even if you don’t want to pull the trigger) nets a lot of XP. He was able to upgrade his shield prior to this by visiting Bloodshot Stronghold and Tundra Express- the vendors there still have gear in the 11-13 range (also, the Hyperion shotty he got from the gold chest was a Critical Crowdsourcing, not a Diversification- sorry about the mix up). One thing I’ve learned from all this is that sometimes you have to make a critical choice kill- that is, kill something so that you can advance and avoid either other enemies or a bad situation, and not just killing to get XP (better to make one kill and move on than to get swarmed, fail in FFL and start from the last respawn point). Also, this had given me a much better appreciation of Hyperion shotguns, which I generally tended to avoid in favor of Jakobs or Torgue (unless it’s a Butcher- I love a good parted elemental Butcher ). JSJ will be off to find Brick later today…

Have you been able to enter areas prematurely in order to lock them at a lower level? If I recall correctly, this was the stage when I went to Opportunity instead of Thousand Cuts.

@Ronnie_Rayburn- no, hadn’t thought of that- might give it a try though. After a few respawns JSJ managed to recruit Brick and then headed to Opportunity to take down fake Jack with a Dahl corrosive SR- not the optimal tool but you use what you have on hand  He made like Zero by sneaking around to the back end and sniping FJ from one of the building pillars, at least until he ran towards the direction of one of the other needed voice samples. Had to clear out a handful of loaders that came after he fired off a flare- not something that FJ has usually lasted long enough to do… Headed towards the climb up Bunker Hill a few bars shy of level 17 so will most likely hit 18 by the time this part of the story arc is over- still hoping to head for Hero’s Pass at below level 19 but we’ll see. As for gear the Fridge and Overlook had vendors with gear around his level so finding stuff on level is still doable. Wish him luck- he’ll need it! :+1:

Junior Senior Jr. has returned to trying to reach Bunker and has done so after more than a handful of respawns. He was helped by still having the corrosive pistol from the Rock, Paper, Genocide mission as well as a corrosive lobbed grenade, a corrosive RL and a Dahl corrosive SR. Some highlights were:

1- after a couple of respawns decided to take Rocko’s Modern Strife mission to keep No Man’s Land clear of Brick’s Slabs and Hyperion loaders. At only 363 XP it wasn’t a bad deal.

2- and after a few more respawns checked the Fridge and Overlook for gear and found a slag Barking Snider in a Marcus vendor in Overlook- things got somewhat easier from then on. Also took an OP7 Good Touch from the secret Stash and sold it for some quick cash…

3- getting past the first constructor was a matter of finding a safe spot to snipe it- fortunately the giant crane that just happened to be parked to the right of the constructor made for a somewhat safe spot- that is, so long as you keep track of the exploders, engineers, WAR loaders and surveyors… Needless to say there where a few more respawns but the action there allowed JSJ to reach level 17, where he could immediately swap to his level 17 absorb shield and place a point in Aint Got Time to Bleed. Once the constructor went down decided to snipe the engineers instead of trying to dash by them- didn’t want the XP but it made it less frustrating to advance. Speaking of which…

4- the BA constructor wasn’t the main problem- it was the RPG loaders and one particular Hyperion sniper that caused another set of respawns. When the sniper showed up for the third time in a row I finally switched to a longbow Tesla to bring his shield down and then killed him while in FFL- after that I sniped the arms off the RPG loaders and crept up just far enough to hit the crit spot on the BA constructor w/o drawing the attention of all the Hyperion personnel that had charged down the stairs. When it finally went up in smoke I headed for the upper gate- and found it still shut. Apparently you HAVE to kill at least all the enemy that appear after you snipe the door turrets in your initial approach in order for the second door to open- just killing the BA constructor on its own won’t do the trick…

JSJ is now sitting at level 17.75 or so- might make it difficult to actually get to Hero’s Pass at level 19 like I planned but we’ll see…

In the words of Brick… “This is exciting!”

Didn’t know that!

Happened to me once when a lone repair Surveyor didn’t want to play. I thought I’d just forget about it but had to track back and kill it to open the gate.

Well, so much for THAT idea…

The good news is that JSJ is now at the Vault of the Warrior- bad news is that he’s level 22.75 and got killed after getting the Warrior’s health down to the second R in Warrior- must have got hit by lava from the floor, which rarely happens when you fight from near the stage transition exit. Got hit again before his health could fully recover (his AS was on cool down) and that’s all she wrote. As for how he got to that point…

Sawtooth Cauldron- I’ve 2 words for Ambush Commanders and the second is “you” :rage: With no singularity grenades to pull the AC so I could hit them in the back I was using a bouncing shock and then a bouncing fire grenade to try to whittle down their health. It worked to a degree but the absorb shield I had was simply no match for their damage output, so after several respawns JSJ went Sniper Sal. Unfortunately the only SR I had was the corrosive Barking Snider but hey, at least it provided splash damage. JSJ set up right at the front of the area where the save point was (learned that lesson after initially getting caught -repeatedly- while repawning at the elevator). It took a while but fortunately the AC kept close enough together that I was able to hit both of them with the splash from a single shot. Eventually they seperated and had to finish them off one at a time. By the time those 2 were dead the bandits had started to respawn themselves, which made dragging the last 2 AC to that point a bit tricky. tried to get a Goliath or to to rage on them but only succeeded in giving Hyperion more cash in respawn fees. Eventually though I got the last 2 AC and then it was on to break Boombringer. BTW, JSJ started this at nearly level 18 and finished at nearly level 20 because…

Boombringer- more respawns courtesy of the turrets atop the far towers, back in the area where one of Zero’s ECHO’s is located. Could only snipe one of them before the circling buzzards ripped JSJ apart. Finally managed to hop-skip-jump his way over to Boombringer and kill it- while in FFL actually (you won’t get a SW but you’ll get credit for destroying Boombringer, which is what counts). Ignored Mortar (who I actually noticed launches a mortar barrage at you- at least 5-7 grenades at a time). If you hide behind the repawn point near the elevator he’ll generally ignore you, so I ignored him and went up and dance with his buzzard squad, which also took several respawns (random fact- if the elevator is at the top Mortar will still spawn at the bottom of the elevator shaft if you haven’t killed him yet). Finally got the Odomo charges and left an area I usually enjoy visiting- usually…

Arid Boneyard- more respawns thanks to the RPG loaders and Hyperion Infiltrators- all those guys can suck it. Hit level 19 here and did a skill reset at this time as I felt I needed more damage skills to overcome the fact that JSJ’s guns were beginning to be under his own level. Went from this:
http://bl2skills.com/gunzerker.html#000000000000000000000052212010000
to this: http://bl2skills.com/gunzerker.html#505020200000000000000000000000000. The reason for the change was that JSJ had a level 19 slag Vladof pistol on him, which combined with the level 18 Torgue Double Penetrating prefix pistol he had been using on fleshy enemies just made for more potential damage. Sal really doesn’t do stealth or distraction well- a problem he shares with Krieg no doubt- which makes killing a bit more needed with him. Gaige and Axton have devices that can distract enemies while they go another direction, Maya has Converge for her PL and Zero obviously has Deception. While I took survivor skills into account just being able to be ignored helps a lot in a challenge like this. Still, got thru the area but collected more unwanted XP, just in time for…

Arid Nexus Badlands- it was tougher reaching Saturn than defeating him (didn’t take as long but still tougher). After trying to bull rush/gunzerk thru the loaders at the entrance JSJ finally went back to his SR and popped enough of the loaders to get to Saturn’s area w/o any more respawns (also hit level 20 while here). Followed the usual dance steps around the building to eventually kill Saturn but the RPG loaders after that were a pain- once again went to sniper mode to deal with them from a distance. Did the same with the BA constructor as well- did you know you can snip its eye from the shack where I take it that most folks hide from Saturn’s attacks? Well, you can- also, if you climb up the outside of the Info Tower and drop in on the top floor, you can’t download the info on the Warrior, as you didn’t technically ‘enter’ the tower (by which they obviously mean that you have to go thru the enemy swarming out the front door to actually ‘enter’ the IT- missed a great option for a stealth approach here Gearbox). Turning in this mission put JSJ at level 21 and for those of you who might attempt this later, WEP, Thousand Cuts and Opportunity will have gear at your level.

Eridium Blights- several more respawns here before finally getting thru to Hero’s Pass and after a few attempts to reach the end of the bridge to spawn in Brick and Mordecai ended in more respawns decided to snipe some of the more persistent loaders and Hyperion personnel, which made it easier to reach B & M. After that it was jsut a matter of dodging what enemy I could and sniping the others (mainly loaders). As for dealing with the BA loader at the end of Hero’s Pass I sniped it from the platform just above and to the right of the bridge/stairs that lead down to the lower area. If you stand back far enough you can watch the rockets explode against the railing in front of you and you won’t be touched. Just keep shooting him while trying to land shots around the constant rocket barrage and eventually you’ll get the win. Ran past everything else that spawned and made it to…

Vault of the Warrior- which is where I started off this rather long missive- sorry 'bout that  Jack wasn’t much of a problem- I ran to the left towards the far ammo spawning point and Jack followed with no crystaliks to interfere and only the occasional loader. His attacks generally missed and fortunately JSJ had a shock Vladof pistol and a Bandit shock plasma castor to eat his shield away. When he got around to summoning the flying surveyor shield he originally ran back to the moonshot console to do it, then after I sniped that one he reappeared back at the far ammo spawn point where JSJ was and called for another one there. After dispatching THAT one Jack disappeared and went to the very first ammo spawn point on the map, the one near the drop down/entance to this area. He gladly stood at the panel while I sniped him from below- I thought I made a clip of it but it doesn’t appear to have uploaded yet (when it does I’ll post it here). After that what I first started off with about the Warrior happened so yea- at level 22.75 now and about to spend another hour or so trying to kill the Warrior. Another thing I learned- did anyone ever notice how the Warrior has 6 legs? As for JSJ’s current build: http://bl2skills.com/gunzerker.html#505020401000000000000000000000000
