“Interesting”… yeah that perfectly describes gaige
For one, no Anarchy = almost no damage, at least in the OP levels (which is what I have gotten every character through, she was by far the last and the hardest one).
Shock damage boosts CAN be nice, if you got your grubby hands on a Twister or a shock Fibber with the ricochet barrel or something along those lines (the really potent stuff). But shield stripping is only an issue (for me) if you just start up UVHM and don’t even know about slag, or when facing badasses, and even then its a question of either swapping to a shock gun or wasting a few more explosive/corrosive/fire elemental bullets than would be needed with the proper element, really.
Her slag skill (almost every character has one: sal has two guns, maya has ruin and scorn, axton has double up, zero has kunai, only krieg lacks one but he’s alright without slag) isn’t guaranteed and has miniscule bonus damage, IIRC someone tested it on the old forums and found it to be worthless if not boosted to 10/5 and at 5 stacks. Also its a tier 5 skill sooo…
Buck up recharges your shield when you are downed. Buck up recharges your shield when you don’t have one on you. Buck up recharges your Rough Rider. Buck up recharges your mate’s roid shield, but what it surely doesn’t do is recharge your shield any time you’d need it to. On top of that, it occupies Deathtrap and leaves him (more) open to enemy fire than usual without him lashing back at the enemies and possibly stunning them. (The best was buck up recharging enemie’s shields, but I think that was fixed).
You see, I did do some research and testing before calling her the worst character for me. I’m sure some people are able to pull off amazing things with her (namely everything Poka does or even Bahroo’s shamfleeting Digi peak record run) and before OP levels, DoT builds were actually a thing (yes I know about a certain OP8 Legendary Catalyst + Infection build, but that relied 98% on grog nozzle and I am deliberately trying to get away from Moxxi guns).
I run Sal,solo l just go nuts, with teammates l still get crazy but l run more support type coms like a purple hoarder. I feel Sal works well with any character because he’s built for pure assault with some key tanking skills.
About Gaige, she is best on solo play IMO. But her Catalyst COM is a good coop COM and can make DoT relevant even on OP levels. Poka has videos about this
Also, a BFF and LBT are good trees for coop. Death Trap can help with shield regen, aggro and damage because of Sharing is Caring. Roid Shields are awesome, you just need to slag for him and done. I can see Gaige and Maya as a really powerful team
Maya pairs well with anybody provided she’s played properly. As for Gaige, her and Krieg can have some issues if she’s using Blood Soaked Shields and he’s rampaging because they can start fighting over kills. Still, with a Maya around, that’s not an issue.

Maya and grenade-Krieg are hard to beat: Converge and Bloodsplosin or Meteor Shower are devastating on mobs. And for raiding, a nurse+Firehawk-Krieg are great and absolutely playable. The only issue is the limitation to melee-Krieg, cause of the Love Thumpers friendly-fire-novas.
Outside of petes bar I had no issues with teammates with love thumpers, as maya you can keep your distance as long as you know they have one. It’s kinda fun in a way, adds another thing to pay attention to.
I personally like the Gaige+Krieg duo. Me and my mate just decimate the mobs with them. The fun part is that we often swap the two characters to add more variety to our play style.
All we’ve played with is Zero/Maya, so that’s all I can comment on.
It’s already been said; Maya works with anybody. She’s the medic and should always be in a heavy hitting team.
The problem is how you run your Zero. Sniper Zero is more of a support character. If she is geared for healing, Maya is a support character.
That means that nobody should be in the midst of the battle. But nobody broke that news to the bad guys. Then, you get swamped. We’ve just started swapping things up. I’m learning melee Zero and she’s learning to use a Sniper Rifle.
She uses Res a lot… a lot. But it’s functional in UVHM.
I like Maya and Krieg. I mean, physically I just like the contrast between the massive, muscled and rough exteriored psycho and the smaller, fair and smoother-featured beautiful Siren. Different classical qualities that stand out really well on the both of them. Personality wise they have a lot of the same things as well. Calm, cool and collected features on Maya stand out really well after hearing the absolutely fear-inducing maniacal qualities in Krieg.
Not to mention, Krieg is a lot smarter, and a lot deeper than people would give him credit for. Especially given the dual-layer of his psyche. It’s only made better by the fact that both voices in his head seem to be infatuated with Maya as well. I’ve got a feeling she’s patient enough for a friend that she can see past a lot of the crazy to basically translate him as they went. Hell, it’s probably not even ‘scary’ psycho anymore for her. And just silly psycho ramblings she can laugh about cause that’s just her Krieg.
Oh are we not talking about ships?
DAMNI-
On topic before I get blurged, Krieg and Zer0 actually is kinda cool together cause of being polar opposites. Or having both of them go knife-crazy.
You know that’s funny because that’'s the character combination in kriegs trailer. When krieg sees maya is in danger and makes them his meat bicycle. I wonder if that’s actually how he got that …
I’ve found Gaige + Maya to be ridiculously overpowered in the peak. I’m spec’ed cata and harmony, along with converge. He’s spec’ed as a shield-regen Anarchy Gaige. About halfway through the second area, he and his striker/orphan maker start one-shotting everything while I provide slag and heals. I’ve never seen anything like it. So that’s my favorite for a two-person team.
The character call-outs make me laugh out loud sometimes. Especially when Gaige is screaming and screaming and I phaselock something and Maya yells “SHUT UP!” Gets me every time.
I love playing melee Krieg with my mate @DaRTH_FuRioN and his Maya in the back, currently on a fresh start playthrough from 0-72 with just the two of us and it’s so much fun, the synergies between these two chars are borderline OP imho.
Krieg in the front slashing things up and applying explosive damage and slag between the RtB cycles, Maya in the back for insane gun DPS (bee, SMGs with cat mod, pimpernel), phaselocks, elemental damage, slag and rez if I go down.
I feel other characters, while being a lot of fun to have in the party too, are not really needed/missed. Sure slag gemini turrets for when things get very messy or a money shot Zerker / Bore zero for bosses would be always nice, but there’s really not much a Psycho/Siren synergy cannot do effectively imho.
We killed a level 59 Duke of Orcs the other day with just Krieg’s RtB and Maya’s rez mostly, as the very first thing in UVHM with both of us at level 50. Took us twice as long as an average end game raid but it was a lot of fun.
After all the people I’ve played with and classes they have used, I’d now say that Krieg and Maya is the best combo I’ve experienced. Watching Krieg run around with this big arm just chopping things to pieces is hilarious - and insanely effective…
Playing as Maya I actually like snipping, longbow Quasar and converge, controlling enemy movement and watching what @DomNation does. The great part is knowing as a frontline melee class, he’s rushing in and drawing agro, and I’m getting better at predicting if I’m needed or not, so I act as both support and killer. Still lacking a few of my favorite weapons, and we have yet to get back into RAIDing, but it is an awesome combo. I personally couldn’t ever do melee Krieg well, so it’s great to be behind someone who can. And Maya is by far my favorite, so it just works.
Looking forward to watch him poke Hyperius to death with a big pointy blade
sal and maya. since phaselock works at a long distance, sal can 1 shot kill most enemies once phaselocked. phaselock can pin entire mobs at sniper rifle range; mobs should never fire a round.
gaige’s deathtrap can get in the way of damage dealers. anarchy won’t build if gaige isn’t killing and competing with sal makes anarchy even harder to build. common krieg and zero builds both need to be within melee range for mobs - which is bad, most mobs should be dead in seconds at sniper range. zero also can’t keep up in damage to sal at range. for the same reason, turrets will never attack for axton. sal and maya both aren’t kill dependent. it can be difficult to make sure everyone gets their ‘when an enemy dies’ skill to activate.
also every group has a pace. slow paced games will result in stacks being lost. fast paced games make it hard to give give kills to the people that depend on kill skills. distances are difficult to manage, with people moving in and out and drawing aggro. this makes it harder to take advantage of bullet splits and bee shields (bekah, flakker axton, etc).
there are many other disadvantages to melee systems or close range systems. fast moving invisible targets and flying targets tend to move the burden to long range, high damage, non-kill dependent strategies. this is admittedly due to the over dependence on dpuh. once ammo runs out, most classes lose a considerable amount of damage and the ability to add stacks. close range systems are more dangerous and put others in danger. if krieg can’t get a kill while competing with a 1 shot killer sal for bloodsplosion it puts him at risk. if krieg goes down, getting a kill is even harder. if phaselock is on cd, sal or maya must now put themselves into enemy range to save krieg. not necessarily, krieg, any character using a close range system. sal and maya are also terrain agnostic. with little need for cover, their healing systems allow more versatility and faster play. other characters will either lack damage or lack healing, which inevitably marginalizes their contributions.
this is just my personal experience - i likely haven’t had the pleasure of playing with competent people. i do feel this is representative of playing with randoms - both on steam and on tunngle.
Unless I wasn’t paying attention, whenever Krieg is in RtB mode he heals every time he causes damage- not just when he makes a kill. And from being surrounded by up to a half dozen rabid stalkers/skags I can say that as long as you hit, you should be healing. Not saying that you won’t go down but if you try to take advantage of the terrain to but your back to a wall/corner it makes even swarms of tough enemies easier to deal with. I only use the DPUH on Krieg for enemies like Scorch or OMGWTH- otherwise it’s my best shotgun followed by RtB for when they get close. As far as losing stacks, with Krieg using a high damage AoE grenade will take care of that both at range and up close- heck, a MM can go inside of the shield thrown up by an ion loader and still slag it, healing Krieg and keeping it slagged until its shield drops. I play solo so I’ve had to develop strategies that benefit my style and build- it could be that the folks you play with are too dependent on other players to really think thru the ‘staying alive and being useful’ part of co-op play…
